A public flu clinic will be conducted by the Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey (VNA) on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at its headquarters, 175 South Street, Morristown, from 8 a.m. until noon. No advance appointment is required. The cost of the vaccine is $25.00 per shot. Cash, checks and Medicare Part B reimbursement will be accepted. For more information please contact Amanda DeFelice at 973-451-4169 or adefelice@vnannj.org.

Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.

During the 2011-2012 flu season, CDC expects the 2009 H1N1 virus to cause illness again along with other influenza viruses. The 2011-2012 flu vaccine will protect against 2009 H1N1 and two other influenza viruses. For more information about the effectiveness of flu vaccine, visit http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/. For more information about how the viruses in the vaccine are selected, visit http://www.cdc.gov/flu/professionals/vaccination/virusqa.htm.

FREE Caregiver Education & Support

The VNANNJ In-Home Caregiver Education and Support Program provides FREE in-home education and support to unpaid caregivers so they may improve their ability and effectiveness as caregivers. There are no income or asset eligibility requirements for this program.

Specifically, the program will provide:

  • A registered nurse will meet with the caregiver at their home to conduct an initial assessment and to set up a teaching plan that will help to relieve caregiver stress and increase caregiver effectiveness.

  • In-home instruction to enable caregivers to identify the skills needed to provide proper care, including lifting and transferring, bathing, personal care, nutrition, disease education, stress management, and accessing community resources.

  • Up to five professional home visits by a registered nurse, physical, speech or occupational therapist, social worker or nutritionist to provide educational and support services, including stress management.

The VNANNJ In-Home Caregiver Education and Support Program is made possible through a grant received by the Morris County Department of Human Services, Office on Aging, NJ Caregiver Initiative. Please call 1-800-WE-VISIT (1-800-938-4748) for more information.

Volunteer to Make A Difference!

Interesting and rewarding volunteer opportunities are available at VNANNJ. If you can spare just a couple of hours a week, please consider joining our team!

Hospice

Hospice volunteers visit people who have elected to spend their final days in their own homes with the assistance of the VNA. Volunteers provide comfort, companionship and support to both patients and their loved ones. A 16-hour training program prepares volunteers for this rewarding work. Free training sessions are held at the VNA headquarters quarterly; the next training session is scheduled as follows: Friday evening, January 28th from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m., Saturday, January 29th from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and Monday evening, January 31st from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. If you cannot attend a portion of this training schedule, we will work with you on alternative arrangements. For more information about our VNA Hospice Volunteer program, please contact Alison Mazie, Volunteer Coordinator, at amazie@vnannj.org or at 973.451.4128.

Friendship House

Friendship House, VNANNJ's adult day care center, welcomes volunteers who can provide two or more hours a week to assist with activities and snacks. No formal training is required. The center is located in Boonton and its hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. weekdays.

House Call Groceries for Seniors

Program volunteers are asked to shop weekly or biweekly for homebound elderly clients. By performing this simple but essential task, you can assist an elderly neighbor for whom shopping has become a difficult chore.

If you have the time to give, the heart to share and the desire to help, please contact Alison Mazie, Volunteer Coordinator, at 973-451-4128 or amazie@vnannj.org.
